The 81-Year-Old 'Elf' Actor Michael Lerner Announced Dead

Michael Lerner, an acclaimed character actor nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of a domineering studio head in the 1991 movie “Barton Fink,” has passed away on Sunday, April 9, as reported by his nephew, actor Sam Lerner.

Sam’s Tribute

As per Variety, Lerner’s death was confirmed by his nephew, “The Goldbergs” actor Sam Lerner, who paid homage to his uncle on Instagram Sunday afternoon. There is currently no other information available regarding Lerner’s death.

Sam’s Instagram post expressed how significant Michael’s presence was in his life as a guide and inspiration. He felt humbled to be called the legend’s nephew.

Sam’s tribute conveyed the young actor’s awe of his uncle and how he looked up to his acting.

All About Michael

Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1941, Michael Lerner attended Brooklyn College to study acting. Before being given the opportunity to attend the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco, he received a Fulbright grant and spent two years in London.

His Hollywood career started when he was brought to Los Angeles by an agency after being scouted in San Francisco.

Lerner gained notoriety after receiving an Oscar nomination in 1992 for his performance in the Coen brothers’ “Barton Fink.” 

In the 2003 holiday comedy “Elf,” he portrayed the strict boss of James Caan’s grumpy publishing firm executive. He also performed the role of a mutant-weary U.S. Senator in the 2014 movie “X-Men: Days of Future Past.” His final part in a major film was in the comedy-drama “Ashby” in 2015.

Michael was last reported to be working on three projects and was in post-production on “Sallywood” with Sally Kirkland, Jennifer Tilly, and Eric Roberts.
