Yemen Stampede Kills 85 People and Injures 322

The Charity Event Stampede In Yemen Claims The Life Of 85 People

A stampede occurred late Wednesday, April 19, during a financial aid distribution event in Yemen’s capital, killing at least 85 people and injuring scores more.

The Stampede

According to the Houthi-run Interior Ministry, the chaos happened as hundreds of underprivileged people assembled at a merchant-organized event in Sanaa’s Old City.

The latest tragedy to afflict the Arabian Peninsula’s poorest country occurred only days before the Muslim festival of Eid al-Fitr, which marks the conclusion of the holy month of Ramzan.

As per The Print, hundreds of people crammed into a school to accept the 5,000 Yemeni riyals (USD 13) handouts.

The deceased and injured had been brought to local hospitals.

Families hurried to the hospitals, but many were turned away since senior authorities were also visiting the wounded and the dead.

Security troops were stationed in large numbers near the school when the event occurred. They prevented family members from coming to the institution to look for missing loved ones.

As per the reports, the cash distribution by local merchants without planning or coordination with the government resulted in the stampede.

The Aftermath

According to Abdul Khaliq Al-Ajri, a ministry official, the authorities have detained two merchants responsible for the uncoordinated distribution of money and are investigating the event.

Videos that were shared on social media sites showed people swarming around bodies lying on the ground in a big complex.

As Eid al-Fitr, one of the most significant holidays for Muslims, approaches, many Yemenis, devastated by years of violence, went to the charity facility seeking necessities. But for most of them the trip became a traumatic event.
