NASA has recently completed the first concept review of its Artemis program, which aims to send humans to the Moon and eventually to Mars.

The review assessed the feasibility, cost, schedule, and risks of the proposed architecture, which includes the Orion spacecraft, the Gateway lunar outpost, the Human Landing System (HLS), and the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket.

According to NASA Administrator Bill Nelson, the review confirmed that NASA is on track to achieve its ambitious goals of landing the first woman and the first person of color on the Moon by 2024 and preparing for sustainable lunar exploration and human missions to Mars in the 2030s.

“The Artemis program is a bold vision for the future of human space exploration, and we are making steady progress toward realizing it,” Nelson said in a press release. “This review gives us confidence that we have a sound plan for going forward, a plan that is both achievable and affordable.”

The review also identified some challenges and areas for improvement, such as ensuring the reliability and safety of the systems, managing the technical complexity and integration of multiple elements, and addressing funding uncertainties and schedule pressures.

NASA plans to conduct further reviews and tests of its systems and components, as well as continue its collaboration with its commercial and international partners.

The agency also invites public feedback and input on its plans through its website: https://www.nasa.gov/artemis/feedback.
