Sourav Ganguly assessed the pitch and conditions at the ground and reported, “It’s a bright, sunny afternoon, but it will get a lot cooler as the sun comes down.

“It’s a hard, drop-in pitch which has a fair bit of grass, but it is brown. It is a good batting surface. Mistimings here will land in the upper tiers at this smallish ground”.

Now we can assume why Dhoni was quick in fielding first. He wants to see how the pitch behaves and chase on these unpredictable New Zealand pitches.
