At Least 6 People Died In New Zealand Hostel Fire

According to reports, a hostel fire that started early on Tuesday, May 16, in Wellington, New Zealand, claimed at least six lives.

The Incident

At least six people were killed after a four-story hostel caught fire in the early hours of Tuesday in the capital of New Zealand. People for their life, some of whom were rescued from the roof, while many others were injured. 

The Loafers Lodge hostel in the heart of Wellington was engulfed in flames and dense smoke throughout the night as 80 firefighters and 20 vehicles battled the inferno. Emergency services said that many fatalities occurred in the 92-room hostel and that 52 people were saved.

The Death Toll

Prime Minister Chris Hipkins stated at least six people were killed, but the mayor of the city suggested the number might be far higher.

Hipkins stated that the precise death toll could not be known until rescue personnel had located the remains of those killed. The New Zealand leader noted that several shift workers were staying at the hostel, making it impossible to determine how many individuals were present at the time of the incident. 

According to fire authorities, it is estimated that 90 individuals were inside the structure when the fire started.

Firefighters’ “incredible effort” to put out the wildfire and evacuate residents was hailed by the prime minister of New Zealand. He promised to conduct a thorough investigation of the whole incident.

As per The Times Of India, Anthony Albanese, the prime minister of Australia, claimed to have talked with Hipkins and offered his assistance, describing the situation as a “dreadful human tragedy.”
