Israel launches major counterterrorism operation in Jenin, killing at least 8 Palestinians

Israeli forces launched their biggest military operation in the West Bank city of Jenin since 2002 on Monday, killing at least eight Palestinians and injuring more than 50 others, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it launched the operation in response to a recent wave of Palestinian attacks against Israelis, including a shooting attack in Tel Aviv that killed three people on June 29. The IDF said the operation was targeting “terrorist infrastructure” in Jenin, a city that has long been a stronghold of Palestinian militants.

The operation began early on Monday morning with airstrikes on several buildings in Jenin and its refugee camp. Israeli forces then entered the city and the camp, where they engaged in gun battles with Palestinian militants. The fighting continued for several hours, and by the end of the day, at least eight Palestinians had been killed and more than 50 others injured.

The IDF said that one of its soldiers was also slightly injured during the operation. The soldier was hit by shrapnel from a grenade, but was not seriously hurt.

The Israeli operation in Jenin has been condemned by Palestinian officials, who say it is a violation of international law. The Palestinian Authority has called for an end to the violence, and has said that it is willing to cooperate with Israel to prevent future attacks.

The IDF has said that it will continue the operation in Jenin until it is satisfied that all of the “terrorist infrastructure” has been destroyed. It is unclear how long the operation will last.

The violence in Jenin is the latest in a series of Palestinian attacks against Israelis. In recent months, there have been a number of deadly shootings and stabbings in Israel and the West Bank. The attacks have raised tensions between Israelis and Palestinians, and have led to calls for a renewed peace process.

However, there is little hope for a breakthrough in the peace process at this time. Both sides are deeply entrenched in their positions, and there is no clear path forward. The violence in Jenin is a reminder of the deep divisions that exist between Israelis and Palestinians, and the challenges that lie ahead in achieving peace.
