Vladimir Putin Will Not Physically Attend the BRICS Summit: Here's Why

As announced by the spokesperson of Russian President Vladimir Putin, it has been reported that the president will not travel to South Africa to attend the upcoming BRICS summit.

Being not physically present there, the president will participate in the summit through video conference.

Mr. Peskov, the Russian President’s spokesperson, declared in a statement on Wednesday that “Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will attend the summit in person” and gave his assurance that “the Russian President’s participation in the summit would be “full-fledged.”

The announcement has resulted in raising speculations about Mr. Putin’s presence at the Johannesburg summit that will be held during August 22-24. Recently, South Africa, which is a member of the International Criminal Court, has issued a warrant against Mr. Putin. The action of the ICC put South Africa in a difficult position as it is expected to carry out its obligations as an ICC member.

It has been reported that the announcement of the Spokesperson came a day after South Africa hosted leaders of political parties from the BRICS member countries. The summit is likely to provide a glimpse of what is about to happen in the run-up to the G-20 summit in India, which is on the move and is to be attended by the leaders of the member countries, including President Putin.

As per the reports, the Johannesburg BRICS summit will include discussions on increasing the number of member states. As BRICS has emerged as a major forum for dealing with the concerns of developing economies, the Ukraine War is the most prominent topic to be discussed in the summit.
