Dead-Beat Plot Interrupted with Hilarious Scenes
The movie “Mistake” can be summed up as a dead-beat plot that occasionally delivers laugh-out-loud moments. The editing leaves much to be desired, and the storyline lacks coherence, leaving the audience with mixed feelings about the overall experience.
The story revolves around four close pals – Ria (Preeti), Nil (Vikram), Sree (Malabika), and Rahul (Sourav) – attending a prestigious city college. As the odd one out from a small town, Ria is taken aback when her friends introduce her to their routine of drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana. Things take a drastic turn when Ria’s hostel is shut down due to excessive substance use, leading her and Nil to pretend to be a married couple to move in together. However, their intimacy results in an unexpected pregnancy, and Nil’s refusal to marry her adds to the complexity of the situation.
Controversial Love-Making Scenes
The movie includes some noteworthy yet controversial love-making scenes between Ria and Nil. Ria’s repeated utterances of “No” and “Stop” during these encounters, disregarded by Nil, may raise concerns among certain viewers. Additionally, the strange reaction of Ria, grinning upon learning about her unmarried and pregnant status, raises eyebrows. Her subsequent achievements as the year’s top student amidst pregnancy and the abuse she endures at the hands of Nil only add to the perplexity surrounding her character.

Indrani Halder’s Drastic Character Shift
One of the most puzzling aspects of the film is Indrani Halder’s portrayal. For a significant portion of the movie, she convincingly plays a loving mother to Shree. However, in the penultimate scene, her character suddenly transforms into a snide police inspector, using extreme torture methods involving hot eggs while interrogating a foreign drug dealer. This abrupt shift in character feels out of place and fails to mesh well with the overall narrative.
Performance Highlights
Preeti Jhangiani’s performance in the movie is commendable, bringing depth to her character Ria. Sourav’s role is limited, leaving him with little opportunity to showcase his talent. Malabika’s potential shines through, but she still has room to grow as an actor. Vikram Chatterjee, despite being a talented individual, feels severely miscast in this film, struggling to fit into his character effectively. On the other hand, Kunal Padhy and Indrani Halder as Shree’s parents deliver their roles with ease, while Biswajit Chakraborty’s performance stands out.
In conclusion, “Mistake” offers a puzzling mix of amusing scenes and a convoluted plot. While Preeti Jhangiani’s acting prowess shines, the film’s inconsistencies, controversial themes, and abrupt character shifts make it a challenging movie to fully embrace.
