No impact in Tamilnadu of Bharat Bandh: AAJ Tak, NDTV News Live

Its Bharat Bandh on September 2, 2015! India’s 15 crore trade union workers have called for a strike.

Ten central trade unions have declared today’s all-India strike, impacting the essential services.

The bandh has been called to protest against the changes made by the Modi-led BJP government to the labor laws.

Holidays have been declared for all schools/colleges in almost all parts of the country. Autos/Taxis are off roads.

Reports suggest that there has been no impact of the strike in Tamilnadu. The strike by the trade unions is said to be the biggest of its kind ever in the country.

The sectors that will be severely affected all over India by the strike are coal, cement, textiles, power, aviation, banks, oil, insurance, and post offices.

The Indian Railways will perform as usual and won’t be affected by the strike, according to Gurudas Dasgupta, the secretary of the All India Trade Union Congress.

What are their demands?

The strike is against the labour reforms newly laid down by the Indian Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.

The committee had proposed to increase significantly the minimum wages for employees and to make them mandatory across the country.

The trade unions have demanded the immediate withdrawal of the labour law changes and also the land acquisition amendments ordinance.

One of the 12-demands also includes stopping privatisation and foreign investments in railways, insurance and defence.

They also want an increase in the bonus as well as increasing the coverage of provident fund and health insurance.

They also suggested including the construction workers in schemes like Aanganwadis.

The trade unions want the wages for unskilled workers to range from Rs 7,100 to Rs 10,000 a month. And for skilled labours to range between Rs 14,200 and Rs 20,000.

The Trade Unions have also demanded a minimum wage of Rs 15,000 per month.
