African Union Joins G20 as Permanent Member: PM Modi's Announces

In a brief televised conference, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the 55-member African group will be the first new member of the G20 since its founding in 1999, in response to Financial Standard Africa.

Leaders of the world’s largest economies gathered for a meeting in New Delhi as the EU became a member of the G20 stabilization group.

The global pressure in the shadow of the Ukraine crisis will be discussed at the meeting.

In a brief televised conference at the first meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the move to join the 55-member African group for the first time since the G20 was founded in 1999.

I think we all agree with this demand.” Modi said in Hindi. After saying, “With your agreement,” Modi banged the gavel three times to mark the African Union’s entry into the organization.

“Before we start our work, I invite the President of the African Union to become a permanent member,” he said.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar accompanied Azali Assoumani, current president of the African Union and President of Comoros, to her seat.

G20 countries said this, and people who know the subject said this. The African Union should be balanced with the 27-member European Union (EU), the only regional bloc that includes all members of the G20.

G20 member experts say that the participation of the African Union is not expected to lead to a change in the name of the G20.

In June, Modi wrote a letter to G20 members, saying that the African Union should receive full cooperation from the organization. This idea is also supported by the EU’s main members, China and Russia, although for different reasons.
