Shirin Ariff, born into an aristocratic family of silk merchants in the vibrant city of Kolkata, India, exudes grace and resilience that can only come from a life of profound challenges and triumphs. A trailblazer in her family, she accomplished a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in English and a Bachelor of Education from Loreto College, Calcutta University.
From a tender age, Shirin’s loving and caring nature found expression in her big extended family. Her academic journey bloomed with accolades, and she reveled in the pursuit of diverse passions such as arts, music and sports. She embraced life with boundless enthusiasm, as an avid reader and in finding joy in playing basketball and badminton.
Life took a tumultuous turn when Shirin was married at a young age and thrust into the complexities of dealing with her first husband’s struggles with drug and alcohol addiction. After eight years of hardship, the marriage disintegrated, leaving her to face the harsh judgment of being a divorced woman. Undeterred, she found the strength to rebuild her life, fueled by her father’s unconditional support, and returned to school to complete her Bachelor of Education. Becoming a teacher at her Alma Mater, Loreto, and later at Delhi Public School, Shirin stood tall as a pillar of support for her daughter.
A new chapter began when she remarried in 2003, venturing into life in Canada with her daughter and new husband. However, a shocking facial paralysis marred the initial joy, and her marriage fell short of expectations, drowning her in stress and anxiety as an immigrant in an unfamiliar land. Despite enduring a verbally, mentally, emotionally, and financially abusive marriage, she remained devoted, hoping for transformation and benevolence from her husband. This turbulent union left deep scars on Shirin’s confidence and self-worth, yet it ultimately served as her awakening.
In 2013, the diagnosis of metastatic thyroid cancer brought her face-to-face with her mortality, forcing her to reckon with the true essence of life and the profound responsibility she held as a mother to four children. Instead of succumbing to despair, she embraced cancer as her catalyst for change and pursued cancer treatment and divorce simultaneously.
Emerging from the crucible of suffering, Shirin transformed into a force driven by her love for her children and a deep desire to make her life count. A five-time International best-selling author, her upcoming anthology “Cancer Heroes” features her chapter titled “Cancer was the Cure,” narrating her extraordinary journey of resilience and grit. As a Life Transformation Coach, she empowers her clients to access their personal power and lead lives of authenticity and freedom.
Shirin’s exceptional life story found its voice in the International best-selling book, “The Second Wife,” narrating her struggles with facial paralysis, survival of cancer, and two failed marriages. Undeterred by setbacks, she now offers programs and workshops as the Founder of the Be Your Own North Star transformative learning program while championing the success of Indo-Canadian women as a Founding Member of Immigrant Women in Business.
