India’s stand-in captain KL Rahul, opted to bowl first after winning the toss, citing the history of the ground as a factor. His Australian counterpart Pat Cummins, who is back in action after a long break, agreed with Rahul’s decision and said he would have done the same. He also revealed that Matthew Short would make his ODI debut as a middle-order batsman.

Both teams face some challenges balancing their squads ahead of the World Cup, which starts in less than a fortnight. India has rested some key players, including Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Hardik Pandya, for the series’ first two games.

They have also brought back R Ashwin, who has not played an ODI since January 2022, to bolster their spin department. Shreyas Iyer, who missed most of the Asia Cup due to a back injury, is also back in the side and will bat at No. 4. Ruturaj Gaikwad will partner Shubman Gill at the top of the order.

Meanwhile, Australia needs some regulars, such as Mitchell Starc, Travis Head, Glenn Maxwell, and Ashton Agar. They have also decided to rest their wicketkeeper-batsman Alex Carey and give Josh Philippe a chance behind the stumps.

The last time these two teams met at Mohali, in 2019, Australia won a high-scoring thriller by chasing down 359 runs, their highest-ever successful chase in ODIs.
