Indian PM Narendra Modi extends his greetings on Guru Purnima

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his greetings to the public of the joyous occasion of Guru Purnima. He wished the nation on Twitter and tweeted, “Greetings on the auspicious occasion of Guru Purnima.”

What is Guru Purnima?

Guru Purnima marks the celebration of the knowledge and wisdom imparted by our spiritual and academic teachers. Celebrated in the month of Ashadh as per the Hindu calendar, it falls on the day of the full moon.

This day is dedicated to Maharshi Veda Vyasa, the sage who is known to be the creator of 18 Puranas, Mahabharata and the Srimad Bhagavatam and edited the sacrosanct Hindu text, the Vedas. His creations (books) have always been defined as the foundation of the religion of Hinduism.

The Buddhists celebrate this day to rejoice the illustrated teachings of the Lord Buddha who is believed to have given his first sermon as teacher, guide and philosopher on the same day in at Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh.

The other reason why Guru Purnima is celebrated with vigor and joy by the Hindus is that it marks the onset of monsoons and thus holds significance for the community of farmers.

Those who wish to delve in to spiritual knowledge of the world start their education and learning from this very day.

The Hindus, Jains and Buddhists hold the festivities of Guru Purnima with a lot of zeal and enthusiasm to remember their respective gurus (teachers) and rejoice the knowledge imparted by them.
