What is Bharat Bandh, happening on August 21

Dalit organizations nationwide have launched a campaign against the Supreme Court’s judgment on Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes reservations. According to Oneindia, various organizations have called for a Bharat Bandh on August 21 to protest this decision.

What was the Supreme Court judgment?

The Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court delivered an important verdict on August 1, 2024. In one of its decisions, the Supreme Court gave the states the right to create sub-classes in Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, i.e., SC-ST. The Supreme Court also asked to implement a creamy layer in the SC-ST reservation. Now, a call for Bharat Bandh has been given regarding this decision of the court.

The primary goal of this Bharat Bandh is to fight and reverse the Supreme Court’s ruling on the reservation. This bandh is likely to get support from various social and political organizations. The demonstration is intended to highlight the court’s unfair ruling.
