Darshan Thoogudeepa to Undergo Surgery After HC Grants 6-Weeks Interim Bail

The Karnataka High Court has granted interim bail to actor Darshan Thoogudeepa, who is accused in the high-profile Renukaswamy murder case. The bail, granted on medical grounds, will allow the actor to undergo surgery.

Justice S. Vishwajith Shetty, presiding over the case, stated, “The court has considered the medical reports submitted by the defense, which indicate that the accused requires urgent medical attention. Therefore, interim bail for six weeks is granted to enable the accused to undergo the necessary surgery.”

Darshan’s legal team had argued that the actor was experiencing severe health issues, including numbness in both feet, which necessitated immediate medical intervention. “My client is in urgent need of spine surgery, and the medical reports clearly support this. We request the court to allow him to seek treatment at a private hospital in Mysuru,” said Darshan’s lawyer.

The prosecution, however, opposed the bail plea, suggesting that the surgery could be performed at a government hospital. “The medical documents do not specify the required duration of hospitalization. We believe that the treatment can be adequately provided at a government facility,” argued the state prosecutor, according to The Hindustan Times.

Justice Shetty, referencing Supreme Court precedents, noted, “The state cannot dictate where an undertrial receives medical treatment. However, the necessity of choosing Mysuru for the procedure needs to be justified. Let a doctor in Bengaluru examine the accused and provide an assessment of the surgery’s urgency and duration.”

The court’s decision follows a previous rejection of Darshan’s bail application by a sessions court on September 21. The actor was moved to Bellary Jail after a controversial photo with a known rowdy-sheeter emerged, leading to the suspension of seven prison officials.

The Renukaswamy murder case has garnered significant media attention. The case stems from an alleged dispute over inappropriate messages sent by Renukaswamy, a fan of Darshan’s, to co-accused Pavithra Gowda, a friend of the actor. According to police, this led Darshan to allegedly orchestrate an attack on Renukaswamy, whose body was later found near a storm drain in Sumanahalli on June 9.
