Tragic Bus Accident in Uttarakhand: 36 Lives Lost

A devastating bus accident happened on Monday morning in the Almora district of Uttarakhand, resulting in the tragic loss of 36 lives and leaving several others injured. The bus, traveling from Garhwal to Ramnagar, veered off the road and plunged into a 200-meter-deep gorge near Marchula.

Eyewitness Accounts and Immediate Response

Devendra Pincha, a local police officer, provided details of the incident. “The bus was carrying at least 42 passengers when it lost control and fell into the gorge. Rescue operations are ongoing, and we fear the death toll may rise,” he told Reuters by phone.

Rescue Efforts and Government Response

Rescue teams, including the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), were quickly dispatched to the scene. “Our teams are working tirelessly to evacuate the injured and transport them to the nearest health centers,” stated Vineet Pal, a state government official.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed his condolences and assured swift action. “We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident. The local administration and rescue teams do everything possible to assist the victims and their families. Instructions have been given to airlift those critically injured,” he said.

Investigation and Safety Concerns

Preliminary investigations suggest that the bus, reportedly in poor condition, skidded before tumbling down the steep terrain. “Two transport officials have been suspended for approving a bus that was not roadworthy,” added Pal.

India has one of the highest road accident rates globally, often attributed to reckless driving, poorly maintained roads, and aging vehicles. This incident underscores the urgent need for stricter safety regulations and better maintenance of public transport vehicles.

The local community has been left in shock and mourning. “It’s a heartbreaking day for us. We have lost so many lives,” said a local resident who witnessed the aftermath of the accident.
