A cryptocurrency businessman was shot and killed at Sao Paulo’s Guarulhos International Airport, Brazil’s busiest airport, on Friday. The attack left three others injured and has raised concerns about the involvement of organized crime.
Victim Identified
The victim has been identified as Antonio Vinicius Lopes Gritzbach, a prominent figure in the cryptocurrency world. Gritzbach had recently entered into a plea bargain with local prosecutors to provide information about his ties to the First Command of the Capital (PCC), a powerful international criminal group.
The Attack
According to eyewitnesses, the attack occurred when unidentified gunmen in a black car opened fire at the airport. Security footage shows two hooded men exiting the vehicle with submachine guns and firing outside the terminal. Gritzbach, who was at Terminal 2, dropped his bag and attempted to flee but was shot multiple times and died at the scene, reported Yahoo!.
Injuries and Immediate Response
Three other individuals were injured in the attack. Two men were taken to a nearby hospital, while a woman sustained minor injuries. The Sao Paulo state’s security secretary has stated that the incident is under investigation, with a focus on the potential links to organized crime.
Background and Motive
Gritzbach had previously received death threats from the PCC due to his cooperation with authorities. As part of his plea deal, he had agreed to provide information on how he helped the gang launder millions of dollars. This cooperation was expected to lead to a judicial pardon and a reduction of his sentence for money laundering.
Organized Crime Links
The PCC, formed in the early 1990s, is one of Brazil’s most feared drug gangs. It has a significant presence not only in Latin America but also in Europe. The gang is known for its involvement in international cocaine trafficking, making nearly $1 billion annually.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the murder. Local media reports suggest that the killing was likely orchestrated by the PCC in retaliation for Gritzbach’s cooperation with law enforcement. The police have increased security measures at the airport and surrounding areas to prevent further incidents.
