Incident During Belgian Rally Leads to Legal Battle
Steve Perez, a British multimillionaire and owner of the Hooch alcopop brand, is suing for more than £200,000 after a rally car he was driving burst into flames during a race in Belgium.
The incident occurred during the Renties Ypres rally event in June 2018, where Perez was competing with his Lancia Stratos HF sports car.
Severe Injuries and Legal Claims
Perez, who is also the boss of the £50 million drinks company Global Brands, suffered severe burn injuries and was left in an induced coma for three weeks following the accident.
According to his lawyers, the high-performance car became engulfed in flames after a member of the refueling team accidentally pressed the fuel nozzle before it was inserted into the tank, causing petrol to spray over the car.
Ongoing Legal Proceedings
Perez is now seeking damages from Vital Equipment Ltd, the company responsible for roadside refueling during the event.
His barrister, Malcolm Duthie, stated that the refueling team was negligent in their actions, leading to the catastrophic fire. However, defense lawyers argue that the fire was an unavoidable accident, with the contents of the fuel tank being ejected unexpectedly after the safety cap was removed.
