
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) will close its Washington, D.C. headquarters from Monday to Friday this week.
Chief Operating Officer Adam Martinez informed staff about this closure in an email on Sunday. Employees are instructed to work remotely unless directed otherwise.
Acting Director Russell Vought has ordered the CFPB to stop all supervision and examination activities. He also directed staff to pause ongoing investigations and enforcement actions. Vought decided the CFPB will not request additional funding from the Federal Reserve. He believes the current balance of $711.6 million is sufficient.

Vought Halts CFPB Funding and Operations
Russell Vought says the CFPB has too much money right now. He believes $711.6 million is too much in today’s economy. He has decided to stop the extra funding. This change aims to control the CFPB’s power.
NBC News reports that Vought sent an email to CFPB employees. He gave them strict new rules. He told them to stop all supervision and inspections. He ordered them to stop working with stakeholders. He also told them to pause all ongoing investigations. Employees must not share any public statements. They must also stop all enforcement actions immediately.

Vought’s Appointment and Criticism
Vought recently faced strong criticism from Democrats. Many questioned his ties to Project 2025. He was confirmed earlier this week despite opposition. Democrats tried to stop his nomination. They spoke out against him in hearings and press events.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer strongly opposed him. He said Vought does not care about American families. He believes Vought’s decisions will affect the whole country. He also called Project 2025 a dangerous plan. Schumer said Vought is the wrong person for this role.
