Netflix has officially announced the release date for Train Dreams, the much awaited adaptation of Denis Johnson’s acclaimed novella. Directed by Oscar nominee Clint Bentley and co-written with Greg Kwedar—the team behind Sing Sing—the film will premiere in select theaters this November before streaming globally on Netflix starting November 21, 2025.
The announcement was accompanied by a striking new image featuring Joel Edgerton as Robert Grainier, a railroad laborer navigating love, loss, and transformation in the rapidly changing American West of the early 20th century.
A Quiet Man in a Loud World
Train Dreams tells the story of Robert Grainier, an ordinary man living through extraordinary times. Orphaned young and raised among the towering forests of the Pacific Northwest, Grainier helps build the nation’s railroad empire while grappling with personal tragedy and the relentless march of industrialization.

Bentley describes the film as “a reminder of how precious life is… how the little moments we often take for granted end up being the ones that give life its depth and meaning”.
Award-Season Contender with a Stellar Cast
The film stars Joel Edgerton, Felicity Jones, Kerry Condon, and William H. Macy, with supporting roles from Nathaniel Arcand, Alfred Hsing, and Will Patton as the narrator.
Following its acclaimed debut at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, where it earned a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Train Dreams is already being positioned as a major awards contender.
Produced by Black Bear Pictures and Kamala Films, the film blends lyrical storytelling with rugged Americana, capturing a vanishing way of life with haunting beauty.
