Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant suffered a painful setback on Day 1 of the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford, Manchester, after a toe-crushing yorker from Chris Woakes forced him off the field in an ambulance.
The injury, described as visibly swollen and bleeding, left Pant in “immense pain” and unable to stand, as confirmed by eyewitness accounts and team officials.
Medical Emergency on Field
Pant was visibly distressed as the physios examined his right foot, grimacing and reportedly urging the medics to “please stop.”
According to the PTI coverage, the toe began bleeding instantly, and Pant had to be assisted by Akash Deep and a physio before being driven straight to a nearby hospital for scans.

Team Reactions: Sudharsan, Gambhir, Gill Worry Over Pant’s Recovery
Sai Sudharsan, who scored a maiden Test fifty, shared the mood in the dressing room, saying:
“Oh, he was in a lot of pain, and he’s now at the hospital taking scans. We’ll know about the update probably soon. If he’s not coming back in this match, it’s obviously a blow, but the other batters are also ready to do their part.”
Head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill were also reportedly tense over Pant’s condition, knowing how critical he’s been to India’s batting lineup throughout the series.
Official Statement from BCCI
“Rishabh Pant was hit on his right foot while batting on Day 1 of the Manchester Test. He was taken for scans from the stadium. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring his progress,” read a statement from the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
Pant is currently the second-highest run-scorer of the series (462 runs), and his twin centuries in Leeds set the tone for India’s campaign. His absence could prove pivotal as India, already trailing 1-2 in the series, now face a steeper climb.
Impact on India’s Chances
With injuries mounting—Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, and Nitish Kumar Reddy are already ruled out—losing Pant could be a body blow to India’s comeback hopes in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
