Indian Court Case Against Major Engineering Contractor Tecnimont Raises Wider Questions for Asia

Tecnimont

The Bombay High Court has opened proceedings linked to the enforcement of a foreign court judgment against Tecnimont, a prominent European engineering and construction contractor with operations across Asia.

The case was initiated by Russian fertilizer giant EuroChem, which is seeking recognition in India of a Russian court ruling awarding more than $2.2 billion against Tecnimont and related entities within Italy-based MAIRE Group. As part of the proceedings, EuroChem has asked the court to allow measures that could include the arrest of Tecnimont-linked assets located in India.

Tecnimont maintains a significant footprint in Asia, with involvement in refinery, petrochemical and energy-transition projects in India, Malaysia and other Asian markets.

In India, the company is engaged in large projects linked to refining upgrades, petrochemicals and low-carbon energy initiatives. In Malaysia, Tecnimont has also participated in major downstream and industrial projects that support the country’s role as a regional energy and chemicals hub. Such projects are typically long-term, capital-intensive and closely tied to national development strategies.

While no Asian projects are directly named in the litigation, the proceedings underscore the growing interconnectedness between global legal risk and regional infrastructure development.

The Bombay High Court is expected to examine the case on its merits in January 2026, a timeline that regional investors and contractors are likely to monitor closely.
