Rani Mukherji’s ‘Mardaani’ impresses critics but fails with audience

Hindi crime drama film “Mardaani” released on Aug 22, 2014 has opened to positive reviews. The movie directed by Pradeep Sarkar and produced by Yash Raj Films is a gritty thriller which is a first for the banner.

The film featuring Rani Mukerji in the lead role of a cop Shivani Shivaji Roy, deals with child trafficking. The movie also has Jisshu Sengupta and Tahir Bhasin in supporting roles. “Mardaani” has been released across 1300+ screens and first day collection is estimated to be around Rs 3.25 crores.

“Mardaani” is written by Gopi Puthran and music is by Pradeep Sarkar’s favourite Shantanu Moitra. The background score is by Karthik Raja and cinematography is by Artur Zurawski. The movie is edited by Sanjib Datta and distributed by Yash Raj Films.

This is Rani Mukherji’s first film after her marriage. Reviewer Anupama Chopra rated the movie 3 stars saying that the best thing about “Mardaani” is the performances led by Rani. Rajeev Masand too rated the movie 3 out os 5 saying “Mardaani” is not a perfect film, but it’s better than many of the Bollywood blockbusters.

Sarita A Tanwar of DNA India praised Rani Mukherji’s acting saying that she got into the skin of the character and delivered a powerhouse performance. Some of the reviewers couldn’t stop themselves from comparing the movie to Liam Neeson’s Hollywood film “Taken” which dealt with similar subject and had a male protagonist.

However all the critics were unanimously impressed with Rani’s acting and she will be the one to lookout for in next year’s awards season.
