Google has announced its first broad core update of 2023, which started rolling out on March 15 and will take about two weeks to complete. This update affects all regions and languages and aims to improve Google’s understanding and ranking of web content.
Broad core updates are different from regular algorithm updates, which happen daily and target specific aspects of search. Broad-core updates are more comprehensive and affect how Google evaluates web pages’ quality, relevance, and authority.
Like any core update, some sites may experience drops or gains in their organic traffic and rankings. However, this does not necessarily mean anything is wrong with their pages. Google says that there are no specific actions to take to recover from a core update other than focusing on providing the best possible content for users.
In its blog post, Google also advises site owners to check its list of questions to consider if a core update negatively impacts them. These questions cover content quality, originality, expertise, presentation, security, and user feedback.
To prepare for future core updates, site owners should also monitor their performance using tools such as Google Search Console and Google Analytics. They should also follow Google’s best practices for SEO, such as optimizing for mobile devices, improving site speed, using structured data, and avoiding duplicate or thin content.
Google releases broad core updates several times a year. The last one was in September 2022, which was less impactful than the previous ones. The March 2023 broad core update is expected to significantly affect search results across various industries and niches.
