Anil Deshmukh, the former home minister of Maharashtra, was dealt a new blow when officials revealed that the CBI had filed charges against his daughter Pooja and daughter-in-law Rahat. The accusations were related to the alleged leak of an internal draft report from the agency in 2021, which cleared the leader in an extortion case.
What Happened?
The agency has referred to Pooja as a “co-conspirator” in its supplemental charge sheet, which was submitted to this special CBI court. They claimed that Pooja organized, led, and supplied logistical support to Anand Dilip Daga, Deshmukh’s attorney so that he could bribe agency sub-inspector Abhishek Tiwari to obtain the draft report.
The Bombay High Court ordered the CBI to look into claims made by former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh against Anil Deshmukh about extortion of owners of bars and restaurants in Mumbai amounting to crores.
Anil Deshmukh has allegedly not committed any cognisable offenses, according to a leaked CBI report to the media. In relation to the leak, the CBI had detained Deshmukh’s attorney Daga and sub-inspector Abhishek Tiwari; they were charged in 2021.
The CBI has stated that Pooja allegedly made logistical arrangements for Daga to travel to the HAL Guest House in Pune, where Tiwari was staying, in order to execute raids in conjunction with the investigation against Deshmukh. This is based on the analysis of WhatsApp discussion groups.
The iPhone 12, which was purportedly used to bribe Tiwari, was purchased for Rs 95,000 from a store in Mukund Nagar, Pune, thanks in part to Satyajeet Wayal, who the CBI has also charged.
The CBI has said that on July 27, 2021, Daga bought the phone from Wayal and gave it to him in Pune.
Additionally, the CBI discovered the discussions that suggested Rahat Deshmukh, Anil Deshmukh’s daughter-in-law, was involved in the plot to leak the report.
