Social Security Recipients to See Up to $1,800 Payment on December 13th

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has begun issuing payments for December, the final month of 2023. This month, some recipients will receive a larger-than-usual payment, up to a maximum of $1,800.

Who is eligible for the $1,800 payment?

The $1,800 payment is for beneficiaries who are receiving both Social Security retirement benefits and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). This is due to a provision in the Social Security law that ensures that SSI recipients receive the same cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) as Social Security beneficiaries.

In 2023, the COLA was 8.7%, the largest increase in over 40 years. As a result, the maximum SSI benefit increased by $135 per month, from $841 to $976. However, the maximum combined benefit for Social Security and SSI recipients is capped at $1,800 per month.

When will the payments be sent?

The SSA typically sends out payments on the second, third, and fourth Wednesdays of each month. December 13th falls on the third Wednesday of the month, so that is when most recipients will receive their payments.

How can I check if I am eligible for the $1,800 payment?

If you are a Social Security recipient who also receives SSI, you are likely eligible for the $1,800 payment. You can also check your My Social Security account online or call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 to confirm your eligibility and payment date.
