Iconic Fashion Maverick Iris Apfel Dies at 102

The fashion world is mourning the loss of a true original. Iris Apfel, the distinctive dresser and multimedia personality, passed away at the remarkable age of 102.

‘Geriatric Starlet’ Became Style Sensation

With her oversized glasses, bright lipstick, and layers of colorful necklaces, Apfel cultivated an unmistakable look that made her a celebrated figure later in life. Dubbed the “geriatric starlet,” she didn’t achieve mainstream fame until her 80s and 90s.

But Apfel had worked behind the scenes for decades, launching the fabric company Old World Weavers in 1950 with her husband Carl. Her bold aesthetic caught the eye of the fashion world, and by the 2000s, she became a celebrity walking the runways of Paris Fashion Week.

“She saw the world through a unique lens – one adorned with giant, distinctive spectacles that sat atop her nose,” said her agent Lori Sale. “Through those lenses, she saw the world as a kaleidoscope of color, a canvas of patterns and prints.”

More Than Just An Eccentric Dresser

While known for her flair and eccentricity, Apfel was more than just a bizarre dresser. She worked as a respected interior designer, including on White House restoration projects. Her talents stretched into multimedia as well, with the 2014 documentary Iris chronicling her life and style philosophy.

“I think dressing up should be fun,” she told the BBC in 2015 at age 93. “It’s part of my life because I’m a creative person and I think other people should indulge in a bit of creativity.”

With her unique sartorial spirit and life well into her 100s, Iris Apfel inspired creativity in people of all ages. The self-described “rare bird of fashion” left a colorful, enduring legacy.
