Gujarat’s Kesar Mango Crop Hit by Disease, Farmers Face Heavy Losses

Farmers in Gujarat are grappling with a devastating blow to their Kesar mango crop due to an outbreak of disease, raising concerns about considerable financial losses and impending price hikes for consumers nationwide.

This year, the Kesar mangoes, which are renowned for their sweetness and unique flavor, have been severely impacted by a fungal infection. Farmers from the district of Junagadh reported that over 60% of their produce displays symptoms of the disease, including wilting leaves and premature fruit drop.

Farmer Harshil Patel expressed his frustration, stating, “We depend on Kesar mangoes for our livelihood. This disease has left us vulnerable, and we fear we may not recover the costs of cultivation.”

Financial Losses Looming for Farmers

Due to this outbreak, farmers are beginning to calculate the potential financial losses they might face. The situation could worsen as the harvest season approaches, and many fear they may not have sufficient crops to sell.

Local agricultural expert Dr. Ramesh Mehta explained, “The spread of this infection is alarming. If not contained quickly, it will have a lasting impact on the Kesar mango supply chain.”

Consumers Brace for Price Hikes

Consumers are already feeling the effects of this agricultural crisis, with retail prices of Kesar mangoes expected to skyrocket. As demand remains high, the limited supply, combined with rising production costs, will likely lead to higher prices in the coming months.

Local shopper Anita Desai remarked, “I love Kesar mangoes, but I am worried about how much prices will increase. It’s not just the farmers; we all feel the impact.”

Government Response to the Crisis

In response to the farming community’s distress, local authorities are initiating measures to support farmers. They plan to distribute disease-resistant saplings and promote better farming practices to mitigate future outbreaks. Agrarian policy analyst Ravi Kumar stated, “It is imperative that we act swiftly. Our farmers need assistance and guidance to navigate this crisis effectively.”
