Hubballi – August 30, 2025: In a landmark civic decision, the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) has officially renamed the Eidgah Maidan as Rani Chennamma Ground, honoring the legendary queen of Kittur who led an armed rebellion against British colonial forces in 1824.
The move comes after years of public demand to commemorate Rani Chennamma’s legacy of courage and sacrifice, especially in a city where her memory is deeply woven into local identity. The ground, located near Chennamma Circle, has often been at the center of cultural and political discourse, particularly during Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.
HDMC’s Deputy Mayor Santosh Chavhan made the announcement during this year’s peaceful Ganesh festivities, stating that the renaming reflects the city’s commitment to honoring historical icons who symbolize resistance, dignity, and unity.
“Rani Chennamma is not just a figure of the past—she’s a symbol of Karnataka’s spirit. This renaming is a tribute to her bravery and a message to future generations,” said Chavhan during the ceremony.
The decision was passed unanimously in the HDMC’s general body meeting, and has been welcomed by various community groups, including Ganesh Utsav Samitis and local heritage activists. The site will soon feature a commemorative plaque and updated signage to reflect the new name.
This renaming also marks a shift in the civic narrative, transforming a previously contentious space into one of shared pride and historical remembrance.
