iPhone 18 Pro Max on AT&T Needs a New Phone Once SOS Hits

iPhone 18 Pro Max on AT&T showing an SOS status that needs a replacement
Apple told AT&T customers on Friday, October 2, 2026, to update the iPhone 18 Pro Max now. The catch is buried under that advice. If the phone has already dropped off the network, the update will not bring it back.

Those handsets need a replacement. A software patch can only try to stop the next one from failing.

The update locks the door after the phone is already out

Apple said it had “identified an issue affecting a small number of iPhone 18 Pro Max users on the AT&T network that may cause a device to lose service and be unable to make calls.” The company pointed people to iOS 27.0.1, plus a carrier settings update that should arrive on its own within 14 days.

“These updates together are meant to help prevent this issue from occurring,” Apple said, in a statement given to 9to5Mac and MacRumors.

Prevent is the word that matters. Apple also said a phone that has already lost service cannot be fixed with software. Calls, texts, and data stay dead. The status bar shows SOS. AT&T said the same fault “may affect calls, data, texts, and 911 calls.”

That is a different problem from a buggy menu. A phone that cannot reach 911 is not a settings issue. It is a brick with a camera.

What AT&T told customers to do

“Our top priority is ensuring customers can stay connected when they need it most, and we are working with Apple to make it right,” an AT&T spokesperson told MacRumors. The carrier told owners to install the latest software, and said people who still cannot connect can go to an Apple store or an AT&T store.

Some buyers said store staff turned down a warranty swap before the public note landed. Apple has not said how many phones are hit, or why a radio fault sticks after the update. It has only been seen on the Pro Max, and only on AT&T.

Launch day was September 18. Apple’s normal 14 day return window for those buyers closed on October 2, the same day the replacement advice went out. A return is no longer the easy exit. A store swap is.

What to do if the bars are already gone

If the phone still has signal, install iOS 27.0.1. Then open Settings, tap General, then About, and wait to see if the carrier update offers itself. According to Apple, that pair is the shield for phones that have not failed yet.

If the bar already says SOS, stop resetting it. Contact Apple Support or AT&T and ask for a hardware replacement. A restore will not wake the radio.
