How Leica, Hasselblad and ARRI Became Big Names in Smartphone Cameras

A few years ago, smartphone companies mainly talked about processors, battery life, and fast charging. Today, cameras have become one of the biggest talking points during flagship phone launches.

That is why names such as Leica, Hasselblad, ZEISS and ARRI are showing up on smartphones from brands including Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo and Honor.

These are not smartphone companies. They are well-known names in photography, filmmaking and optics. By working with them, phone makers hope to improve image quality and attract buyers who care about photography.

Why Camera Partnerships Have Become Popular

Most premium smartphones already offer high-resolution sensors, optical zoom and advanced image processing. As a result, brands are looking for new ways to stand out.

One way is to work with companies that already have a strong reputation in the camera industry. A Leica or Hasselblad logo can quickly catch the attention of photography enthusiasts.

These partnerships often focus on color tuning, lens technology, image processing and video performance. In some cases, they also bring special camera modes inspired by professional cameras.

Xiaomi started working with Leica in 2022. Since then, Leica’s image styles and color profiles have become a regular feature on Xiaomi’s flagship phones.

Each Brand Brings Something Different

Not all partnerships follow the same approach.

Oppo’s collaboration with Hasselblad focuses heavily on color reproduction and portrait photography. Some Oppo devices include special camera modes developed with Hasselblad’s input.

Vivo works closely with ZEISS. The partnership covers lens coatings, optics and image quality. ZEISS T* coating technology is designed to reduce glare and reflections, especially in difficult lighting conditions.

ARRI is one of the newer names entering the smartphone space. The company is best known for making professional cinema cameras used in films and television productions. Smartphone brands are now looking at ARRI’s expertise to improve video recording and cinematic color styles.

More Than Just a Logo

Many buyers now pay close attention to camera performance when choosing a premium phone. Camera samples and photography comparisons often receive as much attention as processor benchmarks.

That has made camera partnerships an important part of smartphone marketing. A well-known camera brand can help a device stand out, especially when many flagship phones offer similar hardware specifications.

A few years ago, smartphone launches focused heavily on processors, RAM and battery capacity. Today, camera partnerships get almost as much attention.

That explains why names such as Leica, Hasselblad, ZEISS and ARRI are appearing in smartphone advertisements around the world.
