India reported 3,812 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, April 2, 2023, the highest single-day increase since December 2022. The country’s total caseload rose to 11.8 million, with 161,240 deaths.
The second wave of infections
The surge in cases comes amid a second wave of infections that has hit several states, especially Maharashtra, Punjab, Karnataka, and Kerala.
Experts have attributed the rise to a combination of factors, such as lax adherence to safety protocols, increased mobility of people, and the emergence of new virus variants.
Vaccination drive
The government has ramped up its vaccination drive, aiming to inoculate 300 million people by July. So far, more than 70 million doses have been administered, covering health workers, frontline workers, and people above 45 years of age.
