Police are treating the death of actor Treat Williams as a motorcycle accident. Williams, 69, was found dead on a road in Malibu, California, on Monday morning. A preliminary investigation found that Williams was riding his motorcycle when he lost control and crashed into a tree. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
“It appears to be a single-vehicle accident,” said a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. “There are no signs of foul play.”
Williams was a well-known actor who starred in films such as “Hairspray,” “The Postman,” and “August: Osage County.” He also had a long career on television, appearing in shows such as “Everwood,” “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” and “Desperate Housewives.”
Williams was born in New York City in 1951. He began his acting career in the early 1970s, appearing in off-Broadway productions. He made his film debut in 1978 with the film “The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh.”
Williams was a four-time Tony Award nominee, winning for his performance in the 1984 play “The Glass Menagerie.” He was also nominated for two Golden Globe Awards and an Emmy Award.
Williams is survived by his wife, Pam Dawber, and two children.
In a statement, Dawber said, “Treat was a wonderful man and a talented actor. He was loved by so many and will be deeply missed.”
A memorial service for Williams will be held at a later date.
