A Chinese national has been arrested by the Gujarat Police for allegedly creating a fake football betting app and stealing Rs 1,400 crore from users in the state.
The accused, identified as Li Jun, had created the app called “iFootball” and hosted it on the Google Play Store. The app promised users huge returns if they bet on football matches. However, the app was actually a scam and the money that users deposited was never returned to them.
The Gujarat Police received complaints from several users who had been duped by the app. The police then launched an investigation and tracked down the accused to China. He was arrested and brought to India on Thursday.
The accused has been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including cheating, fraud, and criminal conspiracy. He is currently in police custody and is being questioned.
The police are also investigating how the accused was able to host the app on the Google Play Store. They are also trying to trace the money that he stole from the users.
This is not the first time that a fake football betting app has been used to scam users. In 2020, the police in Kerala arrested a man for allegedly creating a fake football betting app and stealing Rs 100 crore from users.
The police have warned users to be careful about betting on football matches through apps. They have advised users to only bet on apps that are hosted by legitimate companies.
