Thousands of dead penguins discovered in Antarctica; hints at H5N1 infection!

Thousands of Adelie penguins were reported dead in Antarctica.
As per a statement by Federation University Australia – “a scientific expedition discovered at least 532 dead penguins, with thousands more believed to have perished from an unknown ailment.”
According to researchers, the cause of death might be because of the H5N1 virus.

More details

Although the Researchers have suspicions that the deadly H5N1 virus has caused the death of Adelie penguins, the field tests didn’t offer security regarding the matter. Hence, further samples were taken and sent to labs for deeper analysis. The H5N1 virus emerged in South America around 2022, and scientists are worried about its arrival in Antarctica.
As per the report- “the virus could decimate threatened penguin species and other wildlife on the remote continent already facing challenges from climate change and environmental stressors.”

Emperor Penguins are at risk of bird flu

Twenty million pairs of penguins are bred annually in Antarctica, including the Emperor penguins, which are an endangered species.

Expressing concern over the rise of bird flu, Dewar said – “There is now the potential that emperor penguins could be affected come springtime next year.”

Emperor penguin offspring have already been deeply affected by climate change and global warming. The virus is just another addition that can cease the existence of the whole species of Emperor penguins!
