As the holy month of Ramadan begins, Palestinians in Gaza have found solace in their faith by performing the first Tarawih prayer on the ruins of the Al-Lebbani Mosque in Khan Yunis. This poignant moment highlights the resilience and determination of the Palestinian people amid the devastation caused by ongoing conflicts.
Tarawih Prayers Amidst the Ruins
Despite the destruction, Palestinians laid out carpets and mats next to the ruins of the Al-Lebbani Mosque to perform the special night prayers. “Next to the rubble, we perform our great rituals, praying to God to accept our deeds,” said Bilal Al-Lahham, an imam in Gaza City. The mosque, which was severely damaged by Israeli attacks, now serves as a symbol of hope and perseverance for the community.

The Impact of Conflict on Gaza
The ongoing conflict has left Gaza in ruins, with nearly 1.5 million residents displaced and over 1,100 mosques damaged or destroyed. The Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs in Gaza reported that out of 1,244 mosques across the region, 109 were completely or severely damaged. Despite these challenges, the people of Gaza continue to find strength in their faith and traditions.
A Community United in Faith
The first Tarawih prayer of Ramadan brought the community together, offering a moment of unity and spiritual reflection. “We are still enduring dire conditions, and this Ramadan arrives as many are financially devastated,” said Gaza resident Samah Al Hatab. The prayers served as a reminder of the importance of faith and resilience in the face of adversity.
Humanitarian Efforts and Support
In light of the challenges faced by the residents of Gaza, various humanitarian organizations and international aid agencies have stepped in to provide support. Efforts include the distribution of food, medical supplies, and essential services to help alleviate the suffering of the people. “We are committed to providing assistance to those in need during this holy month,” said a representative of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). These efforts aim to improve the living conditions and provide hope to the affected families.
