Casino Winners Ambushed in Highway Robberies

According to an indictment unsealed on Friday, Juan Gabriel Gonzalez, 22, and Dereck Nathan Lopez, 21, scouted victims inside casinos before following them to their vehicles. Prosecutors allege that the men, along with other conspirators, carried out at least 15 robberies, including three in a single night. The suspects reportedly used firearms, smashed car windows, and demanded money or chips from their victims.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles stated, “These individuals specifically targeted casino winners, using intimidation and violence to steal their earnings. Their actions posed a serious threat to public safety.”

Authorities Crack Down on Organized Robbery Scheme

The indictment reveals that the suspects primarily targeted gamblers at Parkwest Bicycle Casino, Hustler Casino, The Commerce Casino & Hotel, and The Gardens Casino. In one instance, Lopez allegedly celebrated a gambling victory with a victim before orchestrating an armed robbery later that night.

Federal investigators estimate that the group stole at least $274,600 in cash, casino chips, and other valuables. Lopez and Gonzalez face multiple charges, including interference with commerce by robbery, conspiracy, and firearm-related offenses. If convicted, they could face up to life in prison, reports Yahoo!

Local authorities are urging casino patrons to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity. The FBI, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and California Highway Patrol are working together to ensure public safety and prevent further incidents.

A spokesperson for the California Department of Justice emphasized, “We are committed to dismantling criminal networks that prey on innocent individuals. This case highlights the importance of coordinated law enforcement efforts.”
