Air India flight, Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner operating as AI-171, went down minutes after it departed from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (Ahmedabad). En route to London Gatwick, the plane crashed near B.J Medical College, close to the airport. 241 people were killed, according to the airline’s statement. Indian Prime Minister Modi met the lone survivor this morning and also visited the crash site.

The only lone survivor who is a British citizen explained his harrowing experience to PM Modi.

The aircraft was carrying 230 passengers, 217 of whom were adults, 11 of whom were children, and 12 of whom were crew members. 169 Indian Nationals, 53 British, 7 Portuguese, and 1 Canadian were also on board.

Extent of Damage and Casualties

Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani who was among the numerous passengers on board, suffered serious injuries.

As of now, 204 bodies have been recovered. The speculated death toll is as high as 133. About 5 medical students have been found dead. Residents around nearby homes have been affected by the crash. They are suffering from the damage of a huge explosion.

Rescue Measures

Several passengers who incurred severe injuries have been taken to nearby hospitals. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams with approximately 90 personnel have been deployed. Multiple ambulances, fire engines, and local emergency personnel have been summoned. A 24/7 emergency has been activated to support the affected victims and their families.

A single survivor has been revived and is currently under medical care.

What went wrong? Investigations commence

The cause of the crash is yet to be confirmed. However, it is known that a mayday call was issued shortly after the plane lost all contact with the airport authorities. The aircraft was heavily fuel-laden, which resulted in such a huge explosion.

Ahmedabad Airport has been shut down with all flights suspended for the day. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), and American multinational corporation Boeing are probing together to assess the system’s faults and issues.

TATA has notified that Rs 1 crore compensation will be given to the deceased. Home Minister Amit Shah has reached Ahmedabad to look into the matter. PM Modi, Keir Starmer, the UK PM and other global leaders have conveyed their deepest condolences.
