Hindi action film “Zanjeer” was released on September 6, 2013. The movie, a remake of a 1973 movie of the same name is directed by Apoorva Lakhia and stars South star Ram Charan Teja for the first time in a Hindi movie opposite Priyanka Chopra.
The movie stars actor Prakash Raj as the antagonist and Sanjay Dutt in the supporting role of ‘Sher Khan’.
The movie is made on a budget of Rs 40 crores (the US $ 7.2 million) and is produced by Reliance Entertainment with Prakash Mehra Productions.
The movie was simultaneously shot in Hindi and Telugu with Ram Charan and Priyanka reprising their roles in both versions.
The Telugu version is titled “Thoofan” and stars regional stars like Sri Hari in Sanjay’s role. The movie has a running time of 125 minutes.
With its core subject of action, “Zanjeer” fell flat at the box office. But its Telugu version “Toofan” did well. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted on the business done by the movie.
Taran tweeted, “Telugu film #Thoofan Friday business… Nizam – 3.10 cr Ceded – 72 lacs Vizag – 86 lacs Guntur – 75 lacs” He tweeted further, “Telugu version of Zanjeer collects 9cr. More than what most starcast Hindi films collect nationally on their first day”

Andhra Pradesh: Rs 11.06 crore (Nizam – Rs 5 crore; Ceded – Rs 1.7 crore; Guntur – Rs 1.12 crore; Vizag – Rs 0.8 crore; East Godavari – Rs 0.85 crore; West Godavari – Rs 0.5 crore; Krishna – 0.57 crore; Nellore – Rs 0.52 crore).
Total worldwide collections: Rs 16.20 crore (AP – Rs 11.06 crore; Overseas – Rs 2.56 crore; Karnataka – Rs 1.90 crore; Rest Of India – Rs 0.65 crore).
However if it fails to live up to expectations with original, the movie is bound to be affected. The movie faces competition from another Hindi movie release this week “Shudh Desi Romance” which is a youthful comedy.
