California State Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil, who recently switched from the Democratic to the Republican Party, has been accused of sexual harassment and retaliation by her former chief of staff, Chad Condit. The allegations, detailed in a lawsuit filed in Sacramento County Superior Court, paint a disturbing picture of abuse of power and sexual misconduct.
According to the lawsuit, Condit claims that Alvarado-Gil forced him into a “sex-based quid pro quo relationship” that left him with severe back and hip injuries. The former chief of staff alleges that the senator’s demands for sexual favors began early in her tenure and escalated over time. Condit, who served as Alvarado-Gil’s campaign manager before joining her state office, describes a hostile work environment where he was subjected to unwelcome advances and sexually suggestive comments.
The lawsuit further alleges that Alvarado-Gil used her position to exert dominance and control over Condit, leading to severe physical injuries that required back surgery. Condit claims that his refusal to comply with the senator’s demands ultimately led to his termination in December 2023.
Statement from Senator Alvarado-Gil’s Office:
In response to the allegations, Senator Alvarado-Gil’s office released a statement: “Senator Alvarado-Gil categorically denies all allegations of misconduct. These claims are entirely baseless and are being made by a disgruntled former employee seeking financial gain. The Senator has always upheld the highest standards of professional conduct and will vigorously defend her reputation against these false accusations.”
Alvarado-Gil’s attorney has also vehemently denied the allegations, calling them “fabricated” and “financially motivated.” In a statement, the attorney described Condit as a “disgruntled former employee” seeking a payday through baseless accusations.
The accusations come as a significant blow to Alvarado-Gil, who had recently introduced a bill against sexual assault in the California Senate. The senator’s switch to the Republican Party in August 2024 was seen as a controversial move, and these allegations are likely to further complicate her political career.
