"Gangers" Review: Engaging Heist Saves an Otherwise Generic Plot

Tamil action-comedy “Gangers’ starring Sundar C, Vadivelu, Catherine Tresa, Vani Bhojan, and Bagavathi Perumal in lead roles was released across India on April 24, 2025.

“Gangers” serves as a decent one-time watch experience for its viewers.

From the trailer, one would expect a laughing session, but the plot of the film can very well be described as generic and lacking originality, if not boring.

It follows the basic storyline of a mediocre vigilante teaching a lesson to the bad guys in a village.

A school girl goes missing, forcing a teacher to dig into her disappearance and a police officer to go undercover.

The first half of the film sets up for the climax where the pace actually picks up and the story begins to get interesting. Viewers find themselves wondering where’s the funny they were promised in the earlier released short trailer that seemed far more interesting than the film itself.

A team of people who couldn’t be more odd team up to rob ₹100 Crore black money. It’s hidden in a highly secure locker by three evil brothers who control a small town. The second half, focuses on their heist, bringing with it a comedy element that’s subpar at best.

The heist is engaging, paired with small scenes that make up for the first half of the film. In almost two hours and thirty minutes, the film decently manages to keep the viewers seated, and not force them into leaving the theatre halfway.

“Gangers”, translating literally to Gangsters, managed to collect 58 lakhs in India on release day. “Gangers” was released on 24th April, 2025 in theatres.

Directed by Sundar C, and written by Sundar C and Venkat Raghavan, the film marks the reunion of Sundar and Vadivelu after fifteen long years. The 2025 comedy thriller film, with a run time of two hours thirty minutes, was given a 2.5-star rating by The Times Of India, and garnered mixed reviews from viewers as well.
