Keeping in mind the safety of the Americans, President Donald Trump further added, “We’ll see what happens. We’ve given notice to move out, and we’ll see what happens.”
Cause of Conflict
The underlying reason for rising tensions is a disagreement over the nuclear program formed between the US and Iran.
Back in 2015, Iran along with a few Western powers including the US signed a deal. The deal was signed to limit Iran’s nuclear activities. Soon after, Trump’s administration reimposed heavy sanctions on Iran because it anticipated the deal to be weak. This led to Iran violating the deal and adopting nuclear power. As of now, negotiations are going on to come to an understanding on the deal between the two countries. The US wants to refrain from helping Iran develop any nuclear weapons as a result of which a growing hostility has developed.
Iran’s take on this
As mentioned by US Broadcaster CBS, American officials have received the information that Israel is completely prepared to attack Iran. Washington speculates that in retaliation to this, Iran might target specific American regions situated around Iraq.
On the other hand, the Iranian Mission has stated that it isn’t planning a nuclear weapon. Iranian Defence Minister General Aziz Nasirzadeh said that they are seeking to resolve the issue peacefully without engaging in any forceful activities. However, they will not hold back if any aggression ensues. He further added that in case of any conflict, it will certainly target American bases. So, if the Americans wish to leave, they may.
According to reports, a next meeting has been scheduled to discuss this matter over the weekend in Oman. Steve Witkolf, Trump’s Middle East Envoy is expected to join this meeting.
Global Countries respond as tensions aggravates
Other states are taking several precautions. The UK issued maritime warnings in the Gulf. European Union urged for returning to diplomatic talks in favor of the 2015 nuclear deal. Due to escalating tensions, oil prices have soared higher causing concerns in the global market.
