AAJTak News Live: Ahmedabad Plane Crash Kills at least 133, including 52 British

Ahmedabad, India – On May 12, 2025, tragedy struck when Air India Flight AI-171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. According to NDTV, at least 133 people are feared dead, of whom 53 were British citizens.

The aircraft, bound for London Gatwick Airport, was carrying 242 passengers and crew when it went down near Meghani Nagar, a residential area close to the airport.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud explosion followed by thick plumes of black smoke rising from the crash site. Emergency response teams, including firefighters, paramedics, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), rushed to the scene to begin rescue operations. Officials have yet to confirm the number of casualties, but efforts to locate survivors are ongoing.

Rescue Operations Face Challenges Amid Dense Smoke

Authorities have mobilized all available resources to manage the crisis. However, dense smoke and debris have made rescue operations difficult. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) reported that the aircraft issued a MAYDAY call moments before losing contact with air traffic control.

Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu has arrived in Ahmedabad to oversee relief efforts. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also been briefed on the situation and has directed officials to provide immediate assistance to affected families.

Investigation Launched Into Cause of the Crash

 

Aviation experts and investigators from the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) are working to determine the cause of the crash. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, known for its advanced technology and fuel efficiency, has had a strong safety record, making this incident particularly alarming.
