Kokang documentary says 3 gunshot bodies recovered after Myanmar denied deaths

Clip from a Chinese documentary on police recovering remains in Kokang, northern Myanmar

The Ministry of Public Security and China Media Group produced “The Demise of Myanmar-Based Telecom Fraud.” Episode one, “Sword Unsheathed,” ran at 6 pm on CCTV-1.

The series is scheduled through October 7. China Perspective posted a clip of the recovery on X the next morning.

The order was to bring samples back

The film treats the “10·20” shooting as the break in China’s case against the Ming family, one of the groups Chinese police call the four families of the Kokang scam trade.

On October 19, 2023, the Mings moved Chinese nationals out of the Wohu Villa compound to avoid checks. Before dawn on October 20, militia opened fire on people trying to run. Chinese reports of the documentary put the toll at 4 dead and 4 wounded.

A survivor identified as Yan told the film that the person ahead of him went down. “Then I heard two more shots. My ears were ringing, and my whole body felt hot. I looked down, and blood was running from my shoulder.”

Kunming criminal police officer Na Xin said Myanmar kept reporting that no Chinese had died. His commander’s order, quoted by Ifeng from the documentary, was blunt: “If you find the bodies and cannot bring them back, you must still bring the biological samples back.”

China Perspective echoed that line: “Even if we can’t bring the bodies back, we must bring back biological samples.”

Investigators dug up three badly decomposed bodies stacked in one grave at sites tied to the case, including Wohu Villa, a place called the Red House, and Donghu Villa. Myanmar did not agree on the spot to release the remains.

The team took samples to the border while commanders talked through the night. The bodies crossed the next day. Fighting was underway. Na Xin said a Myanmar fighter jet passed overhead and dropped bombs, and that the job was to protect the evidence.

China issued warrants on November 12, 2023, for Ming Xuechang, Ming Guoping, Ming Julan, and Ming Zhenzhen.

Myanmar handed over Ming Guoping, Ming Julan, and Ming Zhenzhen four days later. Ming Xuechang died by suicide before the handover, the documentary says. On January 30, 2024, a charter flight landed at Kunming Changshui with Bai Suocheng and other Kokang figures, plus four major suspects in the shooting.
