Monday morning in Srinagar and other parts of the Kashmir Valley seemed calm and peaceful, with visuals from Dal Lake reflecting a sense of normalcy.

Following recent tensions, the General Secretary of the J&K Traders and Manufacturers Federation, Bashir Kongposh, expressed relief over the India-Pakistan understanding, which has eased concerns among residents and business owners.

Traders Optimistic About Tourism Revival

Speaking on the current situation, Kongposh stated, “We breathed relief after the (India-Pakistan understanding) message… We are hoping that now the tourists will once again come to Kashmir. We assure them that once again their welcome and stay will be warm.” His remarks highlight the optimism among local traders, who are eager to see the return of visitors to the valley.

Before the recent Pahalgam attack, Kashmir had witnessed a surge in tourism, with hotels fully occupied and bustling markets. Reports indicate that hotel occupancy rates had reached nearly 90% before the incident, with over 50,000 tourists visiting the valley in the first quarter of 2025.

However, the attack led to a temporary decline in tourist activity. Now, with stability returning, traders are urging authorities to reassure visitors about safety and encourage travel to the region.

Calls for Reopening Air Services and Schools

In addition to tourism concerns, Kongposh emphasized the need for reopening essential services, stating, “We request the LG to open the air services as well as the schools.”

Meanwhile, the government has been actively working on conservation efforts for Dal Lake and other key water bodies, covering 337.17 sq. km of lake ecosystems, with 25.01 sq. km specifically focused on Dal and Nigeen lakes. These efforts aim to maintain the valley’s natural beauty, which plays a crucial role in attracting tourists.

Government’s Response and Future Outlook

The Jammu and Kashmir administration has been actively assessing the situation, with officials monitoring developments closely. Reports indicate that efforts are underway to reinforce security measures while maintaining a peaceful environment.
