Hubballi-Dharwad City Police are removing dangerous manja threads hanging in public places across the twin cities. Officers and staff are spotting and clearing the banned kite strings from trees, electric wires and other spots.
The drive follows the death of 38-year-old Vidya Manjunath Goudar, a laboratory technician, on Thursday. She was riding a two-wheeler near Shivashankar Colony on Karwar Road when a manja thread got entangled around her neck and slit her throat. She fell and died from severe bleeding. Another person was also injured in a similar incident.
Police Commissioner Bhushan Borase ordered a crackdown. In the 24 hours after the death, police raided more than 50 shops, registered 11 cases and seized over 300 reels of manja. Nine cases were against sellers, one against a parent who bought the string for his son, and one against a person found using it. Cases were filed at several stations including Old Hubballi, Hubballi Town, Vidyanagar, Keshwapur and Dharwad Town.
This was the third manja-related incident reported in Hubballi in the past month. Two earlier cases in Old Hubballi and Bankapur Chowk areas left three people injured. The police have also registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder in connection with Goudar’s death and are searching for the person responsible.

The department has asked people not to try removing the threads themselves, as it can be dangerous. Anyone who sees manja hanging in public places, or knows about its making, storage or use, should call 112 or inform the police through their official social media accounts.
Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara and others have expressed concern and called for strict enforcement of the ban. Police say kite flying should not put others at risk, and action will continue against those selling or using the hazardous string.
