The Social Security Administration (SSA) will begin disbursing September 2023 payments this week, but only for one group of beneficiaries. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will see their payments arrive on Friday, September 1, 2023.
SSI payments are typically made on the first day of each month, but because September 1 falls on a Saturday, the SSA will make the payments early. The next SSI payment will be made on November 1, 2023.
SS Beneficiaries
Beneficiaries who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) will not see their payments until later in the month. The SSA typically sends out SSDI payments on the second, third, and fourth Wednesdays of each month. The specific payment date for each beneficiary depends on their birth date.
For example, if your birthday falls between the first and 10th of the month, you will receive your SSDI payment on the second Wednesday of September. If your birthday falls between the 11th and 20th of the month, you will receive your payment on the third Wednesday of September. And if your birthday falls between the 21st and 31st of the month, you will receive your payment on the fourth Wednesday of September.
The schedule for Social Security payments in September 2023 is as follows:
- August 30: Social Security benefits will be deposited directly into the bank accounts of most beneficiaries.
- September 1: Social Security benefits will be available to be picked up at most Social Security offices.
The amount of your Social Security benefit will depend on your earnings history and the age at which you start receiving benefits. In September 2023, the average monthly Social Security benefit for retired workers is \$1,657.
Social Security payments in September 2023:
The COLA (Cost of Living Adjustment) for 2023 has not yet been announced, so there will be no increase in Social Security payments this month.
If you receive Social Security benefits through direct deposit, your payment should be deposited into your account on or around the scheduled payment date.
