Energy minister K.J. George said on Sunday, October 4, 2026, that BESCOM posted a profit of ₹293.62 crore in 2025-26. He called it a turnaround in the Bengaluru utility’s books.
The last profit on record was ₹568.29 crore in 2017-18. After that, BESCOM ran losses for about seven years. The new surplus is smaller than the 2017-18 figure. It is still the first annual profit since then.
The free-power scheme did not wipe the year
The result sits under Gruha Jyothi, which gives eligible homes free power up to 200 units. George’s post credits billing, probe reading, power purchase and cost control. A BESCOM note reported elsewhere said probe reading picked up about 100 million extra units and a cleaner read of maximum demand. His Sunday post does not repeat that unit count.
⚡ BESCOM turns profitable ⚡
Marking a significant improvement in its financial performance, @NammaBESCOM has recorded a profit of ₹293.62 crore in FY 2025–26, reflecting stronger revenue realisation, improved billing efficiency, prudent power procurement and disciplined financial management.
This turnaround is the result of sustained efforts to improve efficiency while controlling costs. I congratulate the entire #BESCOM team on this achievement.
We remain committed to strengthening the financial health of Karnataka’s power sector while delivering reliable power services to the people of the State.

A year’s profit is not a cleared balance sheet. Reports on the same figures put the accumulated loss near ₹13,000 crore. ₹293.62 crore does not retire that. It changes the direction of one year.
Technical losses, those reports said, had been above 11 percent and came down to 9.13 percent over two years. BESCOM serves more than 20 million consumers and about half of Karnataka’s demand. A one-point drop on that base is real money. It is not a bill cut. George announced no tariff change.
According to George’s post on X, the profit is ₹293.62 crore for 2025-26. The older loss figures are from utility briefings already in print, not from Sunday’s tweet. A household still pays the current tariff.
