R Ashoka attacks Congress over Bengaluru flooding and garbage

R Ashoka post criticizing Bengaluru flooding and garbage

Karnataka Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka on October 17, 2026, accused the Congress government of failing to manage waterlogging and garbage in Bengaluru despite promoting the “Brand Bengaluru” initiative.

Ashoka posted on X that heavy overnight rain had turned roads into lakes and left cars floating in flooded underpasses. He also pointed to piles of garbage and foul smells across the city.

He tagged Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, asking where they were while residents faced the problems.

The post listed three issues: water filling underpasses and submerging vehicles, lack of proper garbage disposal raising fears of disease, and public anger over what he called the irresponsibility of the civic body and the state government.

Ashoka wrote that people wanted work, not speeches, and urged officials to go to the streets and fix the problems. He used the hashtag #CongressFailsBengaluru.

Heavy rain and reported waterlogging in Bengaluru

Local reports said heavy rain on October 16 flooded several underpasses and slowed traffic. One account described a car trapped in water at the Panathur railway underpass, with residents helping the driver. Civic teams had earlier cleared drains in some areas after rain on October 15.

The India Meteorological Department had forecast more showers.

Ashoka’s post did not give rainfall figures or a count of affected areas. Independent reports confirmed waterlogging at multiple spots but did not quantify the number of vehicles or the volume of garbage. The Congress government had not issued an immediate public reply to the post at the time of writing.

Bengaluru potholes and recurring waterlogging

Waterlogging and potholes have been recurring complaints in Bengaluru during the monsoon. An AI-based survey earlier this month reportedly found 5,964 potholes across 824 km of roads in the Byatarayanapura constituency alone.

Ashoka had highlighted those figures in a previous post and questioned the state of city roads under the Brand Bengaluru push.

Reports after recent showers described flooded stretches on major roads, including near Hebbal, Mahadevapura and on the Bengaluru-Hosur highway. Commuters blamed clogged drains and garbage blocking outlets for the standing water.

Civic officials have said drain-clearing work continues, but residents and opposition leaders say the problems return with every heavy spell of rain.
